Free Press Indiana News has a new partnership with a class at Indiana University that means you’ll start seeing more coverage of the Uplands region on our website and social media accounts.

The Media School at IU Bloomington launched the Indiana Newsroom this year to give students practical experience in community journalism and provide news coverage to areas where reliable local news is limited or nonexistent. FPI News is one of several professional media outlets partnering with the class to publish the students’ work.

The initiative is funded by a two-year, $300,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Bloomington and Monroe County.

FPI News is working directly with two students in the class — Zoe Reed, who is focusing on Orange County, and Jack Davis, who is focusing on Brown County — but media partners are allowed to publish the work from any student in the class, so you’ll see stories from a handful of reporters highlighting news from other southern Indiana counties.

We shared the first couple of stories from the students last week — a feature on the Persimmon Festival and a feature on the Hard Truth Harvest Festival.
