Publishing Content — Partners
Content partners are free to republish media originally produced/published by FPI News. Please email Lisa Renze, director of strategic partnerships, at lisa.renze@freepressindiana.org to alert us to the usage, as well as to obtain (when needed) hi-res files, etc., for your publication. See a full explanation of guidelines below.

Unless otherwise noted, FPI News stories are free to republish through a Creative Commons CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 license.

General republishing guidelines:

  1. Ideally, republishing sources should be a Free Press Indiana partner. To enter a partnership, please contact Lisa Renze, director of strategic partnerships, at lisa.renze@freepressindiana.org
  2. When requested, republishing sources will work whenever possible to share analytics with Free Press Indiana about how the content performed on the partner’s site.
  3. Publication of FPI News content, except in rare circumstances, can occur immediately after original publication on the FPI News website.
  4. If content is embargoed for any reason, the director of strategic partnerships will alert partners prior to publication. In rare circumstances, some FPI News content will not be available for republication. This will be communicated to partners.
  5. In some circumstances, individual assets (i.e., a photo, video, etc.) will have been purchased by FPI News for individual use and cannot be republished. Those items will be credited to the original source, which must be contacted independently in order to license for use.
  6. Outlets/partners cannot sell the work, nor do republishing sites have the authority to grant republication access/usage to other sources. Please direct third-party outlets to Free Press Indiana for permission.
  7. Partners should strive to include all the hyperlinks contained in the original story.
  8. In general, all FPI News content must be republished in its integrated entirety. Substantive edits for content or length should be discussed with FPI News prior to publication. HOWEVER, partners may edit FPI News content to conform to individual outlet style. Partners may also change date indicators (“yesterday” to “last week,” for example) and orientation language to account for the time of republication and local readership habits/needs.
  9. Partners may localize FPI News content, or produce a sidebar/accompanying materials. Those materials should be clearly labeled.
  10. Some of the above conditions may be waived with advance permission.
  11. Free Press Indiana will strive to alert partners in the event content has been updated/corrected.

Specific guidelines:

  • Outlets/partners should strive to republish the whole story, credit FPI News, and the individual journalists (writers, photographers, graphic artists, etc.) and, if republishing FPI News stories online, must include a link to the original publication page using this text at the top of the republished story: This article was originally published by Free Press Indiana News [link to article], and is republished through our partnership with Free Press Indiana.
